Wednesday of the 25th week in ordinary time
Proverbs 30: 5-9 Luke 9: 1-6
Theme: Moderation is the key
In the 1st reading of today from the Book of Proverbs, we are encouraged to embrace moderation in our lives, lest we stray from the path that leads to life. This admonition is a very important one, in our world today. Especially, in people’s quest to have a very comfortable life. Some people go to the extreme because of their inordinate ambitions, and they get involved in so many things that they are not proud of. This admonition is important in everything we do in life, even though the emphasis of the Book of Proverbs is centered on God and on our human relationships. This admonition is reiterating the assertion which says that virtue is in the mean. If we allow this assertion to guide us in everything we do in life, it will be difficult for us to get it wrong.
Also, today’s 1st reading admonishes us to always take refuge in God, no matter the situation we find ourselves in life, because he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. This brings us to a very important question today, when you are faced with the challenges and difficulties of life, do you take refuge in God? If your answer is no, then the Lord is inviting you to come to him and you will find refuge. Like the Book of Proverbs points out, the word of God is true. If he says it, he will surely do it. The good thing is that God is always waiting and ready to come to our assistance whenever we come to him with the challenges of life. Go to him today and present that situation in your life and family to him, and he will show you that he is God.
In the gospel reading of today from St. Luke, Jesus sends out the twelve Apostles, after preparing them for what awaits them in the ministry. Interestingly, he warns them about going with extra luggage, that may become a hindrance to their assignment. By extension, all of us as Christians are also part of the commissioning of Christ. The Apostle went for this mission with only what was necessary for their mission. The question to all of us today is, are you carrying any excess luggage in your journey of faith that is posing as a hindrance to the mandate God has given to all of us as his children? If the answer is yes, then you must let them go and travel light like Jesus mandated his Apostles to do. Never carry any excess luggage that will make you miss heaven. As you strive to make this happen, may almighty God bless you, in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, Amen. Peace be with you.
