Isaiah 42: 1-7    John 12: 1-11

Theme: Be sincere

In the gospel reading of today from St. John, we see Judas saying that the ointment that Mary poured on the feet of Jesus would have been sold and the money given to the poor. Ordinarily, one would have applauded the assertion of Judas Iscariot if he was sincere about his statement. This is because the comfort of the poor is very important to Jesus and his followers. But unfortunately, Judas Iscariot was driven by his selfish desire and greed, and not because he truly cared for the poor. It is interesting how some people can use others to achieve their selfish and greedy desires, without their knowledge.

The attitude of Judas Iscariot in today’s gospel, has continued over time, even in our own time. It has not stopped, this is because some people still hide their evil plans under the guise of something that is good and most people will easily accept, not knowing that there are personal interests hidden underneath. As we continue to move towards the crucifixion of Jesus, our readings continue to open to us all the intrigues that accompanies the situation that Jesus have found himself.

Even at this difficult time in the life of Jesus, one of his closest men (Judas Iscariot), is still considering how to make some money for himself at the expense of the group. We must be very careful about the things we desire, lest we make choices that will eventually lead to our destruction. This same greed was what finally led to the destruction of Judas Iscariot.

In the 1st reading of today from the prophet Isaiah, he gives us an insight into the coming of the anointed one of God, who will come with justice to put things right and change things for the better for the common good of everyone. In this passage, the prophet points out the fact that the chosen one is going to be a light to the nations and turn things around for the good of all. There is going to be a change of statuesque, that will bring good news and glad tidings to the people. Suffice it to say that the message of the prophet Isaiah is a message of hope, that is going to turn things around in such a way that it will benefit everyone without exemption. May the grace of God continue to guide us in everything that we do, in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, Amen. Peace be with you.
