Friday of the 5th week of Lent
Jeremiah 20: 10-13 John 10: 31-42
Theme: The mighty man in battle
Jesus is our mighty man in battle, who bring victory to all those who trust in him. In the 1st reading from the prophet Jeremiah, he presents to us the challenges he was facing, because of his call to discipleship. The people cannot stand the truth that he is presenting to them, and because of that, they are planning the downfall of the prophet. Interestingly, the prophet is aware of their plans, and he takes everything to God in faith. This is what is expected of us as children of God, when we find ourselves in similar situations. It is very important that we hand everything over to God and allow him to fight the battle for us, knowing fully well that we do not deserve their evil plan against us. At such times, we must be prayerful and present all our challenges to God who is the mighty man in battle.
The experiences of the prophet Jeremiah point out the fact that there are bound to be difficulties and challenges in our life as children of God. It doesn’t really matter whether we are upright in our dealings or not. Just as we have seen in the case of the prophet Jeremiah in todays 1st reading, he did not do anything wrong to warrant the evil plot of the people. They simply could not accept the fact that he was challenging their lifestyle by saying it the way it is. When such situations come, we must handle them with faith and trust in God. With God on our side, we are sure of victory. Let us try to always commit our cause to the Lord, he will never disappoint us; no matter the situation we find ourselves.
In the gospel reading of today, the plot to arrest Jesus continues to increase; but he escaped because the hour has not yet come. They are accusing him of blaspheming, not minding his words and works that he has done. The people refused to accept his works because they are blinded by envy and hatred for him. Dearly beloved in Christ, the season of Lent presents us the opportunity to work on our human weaknesses and gladly embrace the teachings of Christ in our daily life.
