Holy Thursday
Exodus 12: 1-8.11-14 1 Cor. 11: 23-26 John 13: 1-15
Theme: “Do this in Memory of Me”
Today the church begins the celebration of the Easter Triduum. This signifies the three most important days in our lives as children of God and Catholics. These three important days are Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. They are all linked together and interconnected. They unfold the mystery of our salvation, won for us on the cross with the love of Jesus Christ.
In our Liturgy on this Holy Thursday, we see the institution of two very important sacraments. They are the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and the Ministerial priesthood instituted by Jesus Christ himself. In addition, we see the command of Jesus that as his followers we should emulate him in our practice of love for one another just as he has done for us by washing the feet of his disciples. In the action of Jesus in today’s liturgy, we see love, humility, and service. The washing of feet performed by Jesus in today’s liturgy, is usually reserved for the slaves or maids in the house, according to the practice of the Jewish people during the time of Jesus. This shows us the height of Jesus’ humility. By this action, Jesus is inviting us all to embrace selfless love, service, and humility in our call to discipleship as children of God.
Also, it is important to point out the fact that the washing of feet in this evening’s liturgy is also very symbolic. This is because it points out the fact that there is need for one to be clean before partaking of the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. It is an invitation for us as Catholics to make good use of the sacrament of penance in preparation for the reception of the Holy Eucharist at all times.
My brothers and sisters in Christ let us make good use of this Easter Triduum, by emulating Jesus in his practice of love, humility, and service. Whatever position of authority we occupy, we must always see it as a gift from God and an opportunity to serve the people of God. Jesus has shown us the way to go, it is for us to strive and live it out in our daily lives.
Let us strive and allow this year’s Easter Triduum to make a difference in our lives and practice of faith. May God grant us the grace to emulate the actions of Christ in our daily lives, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Peace be with you!
