Monday of the 10th week in ordinary time

1 Kings 17: 1-6     Mathew 5: 1-12

Theme: One with God

In the 1st reading of today, we see how the power of God supports those who live their lives in a way that is pleasing to God, just like the prophet Elijah. The fact that he was a true prophet of God, is seen in how his words were honoured by God and God directed him on where to go and made provision for what he will be eating and how the raven will be delivering it to him. This simply points out the fact that what we need to do, to be at peace with God and be united to him, is that we must make honest and sincere effort to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to God. If we can do this, we can be rest assured that God will continue to honour himself by manifesting his power in our lives. Interestingly, things have not changed in any way, God is still the same and he does not change. So, this simply means that the ball is in our court, we have to make effort and live like true children of God that we are called to be. The situation of the prophet Elijah can be the situation of anyone of us who is ready to walk that thorny path that leads to eternal life. It is a difficult path to walk, but it is worth all the trouble and stress that is associated with it.

The response of our psalm today, reminds us that our help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. An assertion that is confirmed from the experience of the prophet Elijah in the 1st reading of today. If we want our words to be honoured by God just like that of the prophet Elijah, then we must be ready to walk that path that leads to life with faith. The most important thing in this situation is that we must make honest effort to play our own role by living as true children of God that we are called to be and allow God to do his own part. The main challenge is for us to be faithful in our resolve to walk that path that is scarcely walked by many and leave the rest to God. He is not man, he is always faithful to his promises, he will never fail or disappoint all those who trust in him and walk in his ways.

We are all encouraged today to accept the invitation presented to us as children of God, to emulate Christ and live like true children that we are called to be, in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, Amen. Peace be with you.
