The Transfiguration of the Lord
Daniel 7: 9-10. 13-14 2 Peter 1: 16-19 Mark 9: 2b-10
Theme: The glory of God
Today the church celebrates the feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord. A celebration that presents to us as followers of Christ the glory of God. He took his Apostles Peter, James and John and showed them the glory of God. We are told that Elijah and Moses appeared on the mountain with them. Moses representing the Old Testament and Elijah the prophets, while Jesus is the fullness thereof. The Apostles were overwhelmed by the vision they saw, and Peter wanted them to remain on the mountain top. This was because of the revelation of the glory of God that they just experienced.
This experience strengthened their faith in Jesus Christ, especially with the voice from the cloud that confirmed who Jesus was and that they should listen to him. This encounter must have greatly strengthened their faith and resolve to continue to stay with Jesus, especially as they face the difficulties that awaits them. On the mountain top, God revealed Jesus as his beloved son. In the same way we must continually make honest and sincere effort to reveal the glory of God to all those who encounter us in our journey of faith. The glory of God is all around us as children of God, it is left for us to help and lead others to this glory that we enjoy as children of God. Let the glory of God in your life continue to radiate and attract other people to God in their own lives. This is part of what we are called to do in our daily lives as children of God.
Interestingly, on the mountain top, God makes known to us his plans for humanity, by giving us his beloved son Jesus Christ to come and be one with us except sin. We are told by the father to listen to Jesus. By implication, listening to Jesus means that we embrace the Transfiguration by transforming our lives and living in a way that is good and pleasing in the sight of God. It is a call for us to put into practice the word of God that we read, listen to and preach in our daily lives. There is no better time for us to take seriously the invitation that todays feast presents to us. To do this, means that we have decided to witness for Christ as ambassadors wherever we find ourselves. The more we witness for Christ, the more impact we will make in the lives of all those who encounter us. We pray that the glory of God will continue to radiate in our lives and win more souls for Christ, in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, Amen. Peace be with you.
