Monday of the 28th week in ordinary time

Galatians 4: 22-24.26-27.31-5:1       Luke 11: 29-32

Theme: Why do you seek Him?

In the gospel reading of today from St. Luke, we see the assertion of Jesus about the people of his own time, they are in search of signs and wonders. It is interesting how events continue to unfold from one generation to another, even when mistakes are made repeatedly. Jesus expressed his dislike against the attitude of his people, and things have not changed in our own time too. It is very clear that if Jesus comes in our own time, he will also say the same thing about our generation. This is seen in how our people make themselves vulnerable to fake pastors and prophets because of their desperation. We are equally a generation that is in search of signs and wonders, just like the people of the time of Jesus. This is why people move to any where they are told that there is a powerful man of God that can handle their situation. However, this does not undermine the fact that there are authentic pastors and prophets, it is simply saying that the desperation of so many people has led them to places, and to do things that they are not proud to share with others.

Dear friends in Christ, this brings us to a very important question today, ‘why do you seek God’? Is it because you love him and you want to follow his path and grow spiritually in the faith, or because you want to experience signs and wonders from him? The answer to this question will go a long way towards helping us to know the next step to take in our journey of faith. Jesus made it very clear in today’s gospel reading that it is wrong for us to seek him because of signs and wonders. All these will naturally come as icing in the cake, when we follow God in sincerity of heart and not because of what we intend to gain from him. The Lord invites us to a change of heart today. If we have made this mistake in the past, we are all encouraged today to retrace our steps and honestly seek God with sincerity and love. This invitation is presented to all of us as children of God, it is not limited to any individual or group. As you strive to embrace this invitation, may almighty God bless you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, Amen. Peace be with you.
