Monday of the 34th week in ordinary time
Rev. 14: 1-3. 4b-5 Luke 21: 1-4
Theme: The generous widow
In the gospel reading of today, we hear the story of the widow who gave everything she had. Interestingly, Jesus noticed it and talked about it to his audience. She was not the richest in the group, but she was the most generous in the group. Others gave out of the abundance they had, while she gave everything she had. In this situation, it was not about the quantity that was given, it was rather about the quality that was given. She was driven by love, to give all she had, even though it was not much in quantity.
Dearly beloved in Christ, today’s gospel is simply encouraging us to emulate the widow in the practice of charity. We don’t have to be very rich before we share with others who do not have; let us share the little we have with others and make a difference. One thing we must know is the fact that nobody becomes poor because he or she is generous. The saying that givers never lack, is very true. When we are generous, we attract the blessings of God towards ourselves. There is greater joy in giving than in receiving.
The gospel reading of today is timely, taking into consideration the fact that things are becoming difficult in our world and Christmas is around the corner; make this year’s Christmas a memorable one for somebody. Just be charitable towards somebody within your means. I am sure God will appreciate it and bless you for it. This is a wonderful time to show love to the less privileged around you. A cup of water will make a difference in the life of someone who needs it.
We are all encouraged today to emulate the widow in today’s gospel reading and God will richly bless you. As you do this, may almighty God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Peace be with you.
