27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B (Genesis 2:18-24 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16)
Theme: The Union
The first reading today tells us how the woman was taken out of the man. In the gospel, Jesus emphasizes the sacredness of the union of marriage. He discourages anything that will bring about disunity and divorce in the union of marriage. The marriage vows make the man and woman one; they are no longer two but one, and God is the second person in this union. The presence of children in this union is dependent on God strictly speaking and not the man and woman. It is worthy of note that as we contract marriages weekly, so also is the number of cases going to the tribunal for dissolution is increasing and also the cases of divorce. This situation raises a lot of questions that requires answers from us as children of God. How did we get to where we are now? How did we get to this stage as a people? Marriage is supposed to be a Sacrament, is it still sacramental for many of us?
On this twenty-seventh Sunday, the Lord is saying to us we can make marriage work. Are you willing to play your role? Are you willing to cooperate with God’s grace? Let us give God a chance and allow him to make our marriages blissful. It is possible for your marriage to work. It is possible for your family to be bonded by God. It is possible for your family to be like that of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. So, when there are challenges in any given marriage that is not the time to invite parents, friends or any third party. Instead invite God who is the second party in your union. Go back to the Master, who himself who joined you together. He who said no one shall put asunder shall grant you peace when you need him the most.
Therefore, let us take today’s admonition of inviting God into our marriage unions seriously. Let us return back to him that he should make our families like that of the holy family. Many would ask is it possible? Yes it is possible, if we give God the chance. God never disappoints, he is ever faithful. Give him a chance today and you will realize that what used to be problem will never be there again.
It is on this note that we must strongly condemn the concept of divorce. Divorce is not an option for those of us who believe in God. This is what Jesus tells us today. He made it categorically clear that divorce is not an option, it is not part of God’s plan for marriage. So let us make effort to make our marriages work. Let us make effort and ensure that disunity never comes into play in our marriages as we give God a chance.
