Saturday of the 2nd week of Easter

Acts 6: 1-7     John 6: 16-21

Theme: Fair judgement

In the 1st reading of today, as the number of disciples continued to increase, there was need to bring in more people to assist the Apostles in the administering of the lives of the believers and attending to situations that come up from time to time in their midst. The Apostles appointed seven men of repute among the disciples, to handle the complaint that was brought by the Hellenists against the Hebrews. The prompt response by the Apostles to the problem that came up among the people is worthy of emulation. With their action, the problem is resolved and there is no room for any for of division or hate among the people. This is a wonderful practice within any group that we find ourselves, everyone should be comfortable within the group and have a sense of belonging, if the group truly desire to grow and move forward.

The action of the Apostles also points out the fact that they had a priority and did not want any form of distractions from the most important thing to them. They pointed out the fact that it is better for them to concentrate on prayer and the ministry of the word. It was possible for them to make this decision because they were focussed on what matters most in their ministry at that point in time. In the same way, we must always set our priorities right and be focussed as we navigate through the challenges of life. If we are focussed and set our priority right, it will help us to get to where we are going to. But the opposite will be the case when we do not set our priority right, it will also give room for mistakes that may become setbacks for us in the end.

In our gospel reading from St. John today, Jesus tells his Apostles, “Do not be afraid, it is I”. In the same way Jesus is saying to you today, do not be afraid, he is with you in that situation you are presently going through in your life. He is going to see you through it, and it will end praise. May almighty God bless you, in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, Amen. Peace be with you.
