Wednesday of the 2nd week of Lent year A

Theme: The cost of discipleship

The 1st reading, we have today, presents to us the challenges faced by the prophet Jeremiah, as he carries out the directives of God, by giving the people the message of God. He is being unjustly condemned and attacked by the people, because his uprightness is challenging their wrong way of life and doing things. There are plots to destroy the prophet Jeremiah and bring him to disrepute. This type of situation has continued in the life of the people of God over the centuries, even in our own time. The fight between good and evil has not stopped, it is still present in our own time.

We see the pain and agony of the prophet Jeremiah, and he cries out to God. Knowing fully well that it is only God that he can have recourse to in such a situation. You and I can also find ourselves in such situation from time to time, because of our option for what is good and right; when that day comes, just trust in God like the prophet Jeremiah and remain resolute. That type of situation can be very painful and disheartening, but we must be courageous and look up to God in faith; knowing fully well that he cannot desert us at such a time. Be strengthened, he will stand with you, the same way he stood with the prophet Jeremiah.

The world in which we live today, is more comfortable with the ways of the world, as against the ways of God. In view of this, there are a lot of compromises that are detrimental to the people, exploitative and evil. We must make an honest effort to always be on the side of what is good, right, and just. Always remember that evil will never triumph over the good, it is only a matter of time. Always be on the side of God, irrespective of the huddles you face because of your option for Christ.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, never allow such challenges to make you lose faith in God, remain focused and trust in God. Those challenges will always be there, but you must be strong and courageous because you have God on your side. He will always sustain and stand by you, whenever the need arises. Remember the saying that it is only a tree with fruits that will be harvested, your option for Christ is a priced jewel; guide it jealously.

May almighty God bless you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. Amen. Peace be with you.
