Ezra 6:7-8.12b.14-20       Luke 8:19-21

Theme: The family of God

In our gospel reading from St. Luke, Jesus gives us an inclusive definition of the family. A definition that goes beyond our immediate and extended family definition as we know it. The new definition given by Jesus, gives all of us the opportunity to be part of Gods family. According to Jesus in the gospel reading of today, he said my “Mother and bredren are those who hear the word of God and keep it”. By implication, it is left for you as an individual to decide whether you want to be part of the family of God or not.

All those who hear the word of God and keep it, have automatically declared to be a member of the family of God. This brings us to a very important question today, ‘Are you a member of the family of God’? This is a question we can all answer as individuals because the answer is known to us. If you already belong to this wonderful family as presented by Jesus, then remain steadfast. But if you have not opted for this family, the Lord is inviting you today to make an honest and sincere effort by doing the needful. This is because to belong to this family, simply means that you are already on the right path that will lead you to eternal life, and that is our prayer and desire as children of God.

It is important that we take seriously the invitation presented to us today by Jesus Christ himself, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Don’t also be discouraged as you begin to make honest effort to put the word of God into practice in your daily life when things are not going as expected. One thing you must come to terms with is that it is not going to happen automatically; it is a gradual process. The most important thing is to remain focused and continue to work hard. Every honest effort that we make towards making this to happen, will be blessed by God.

The most important thing is to do your best and trust in Gods process, he will lead you to greener pasture. We are all encouraged today to be part of Gods family and do our best to remain a member all the days of our lives. It is possible with the grace of God, never give up because of the difficulties and challenges you may encounter on your way. As you continue to make effort may almighty God bless you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. Amen. Peace be with you.
